What is a Nakshatra?
Nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astronomy — equal 13°20′ arcs of the zodiac through which the Moon travels, spending roughly one day in each. They are older than the 12-sign zodiac in Indian tradition, appearing in the Vedas themselves, and they remain the backbone of personal astrology: your janma nakshatra (birth star) is the Moon's mansion at the moment you were born.
The 27 mansions
From Ashwini through Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira and onward to Revati, each nakshatra has a ruling deity, a planetary lord, a symbol and a temperament. The sequence of planetary lords (Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury — repeating three times) also drives the Vimshottari dasha system, the timing backbone of Vedic astrology.
Each nakshatra divides into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′. The pada refines everything: it determines the traditional first syllable of a newborn's name (the Avakahada system — Chu, Che, Cho, La for Ashwini's four padas), and it maps each nakshatra into the navamsa chart.
What your birth nakshatra is used for
Naming: the pada syllable convention gives the child a name harmonised with their moon position. Matching: gun milan scores Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi kootas directly from the two partners' nakshatras. Muhurat: certain nakshatras (Pushya, Rohini, Hasta) are favoured for beginnings; others (Bharani, Krittika) are avoided for specific activities. Daily life: many people observe their janma nakshatra day each month as a personal auspicious day.
Gana, Yoni and Nadi — the nakshatra classifications
Every nakshatra belongs to a Gana (temperament): Deva (gentle), Manushya (balanced) or Rakshasa (fierce — astrologically intense, not evil). Each has a Yoni (animal symbol) used for instinctive-compatibility matching, and a Nadi (Adi, Madhya, Antya) — the constitutional channel whose matching carries the heaviest weight (8 of 36 points) in marriage compatibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my nakshatra?
You need your birth date and ideally time: the Moon moves through one nakshatra in about a day, so the time matters near boundaries. Our free rashi calculator computes your janma nakshatra and pada instantly in your browser.
What is the difference between rashi and nakshatra?
Both describe the Moon's position at birth, at different resolutions: the rashi is which of 12 signs (30° each) the Moon occupied; the nakshatra is which of 27 mansions (13°20′ each). Each rashi contains 2¼ nakshatras.
Which nakshatra is best?
None is "best" — each carries strengths. For muhurat purposes, Pushya is traditionally called the most auspicious nakshatra for almost everything except marriage; Rohini, Hasta, Uttara Phalguni and Shravana are also broadly favourable.
