Yoga and Karana: The Quiet Limbs of the Panchang
Everyone checks tithi and nakshatra; yoga and karana are the two limbs of the panchang most people skip — yet muhurat selection takes both seriously, and one karana in particular (Vishti, better known as Bhadra) can postpone weddings and festival rituals by hours.
The 27 yogas
A yoga (here meaning "combination", unrelated to the physical practice) is computed by ADDING the longitudes of Sun and Moon and dividing the total into 27 parts of 13°20′. Each carries a quality: Siddha, Sadhya, Shubha, Amrita and Priti are favourable for beginnings; Vyatipata, Vaidhriti, Vyaghata, Shoola and Ganda are avoided. Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are weighted so negatively that many panchangs flag them in red — ongoing work continues, but new undertakings wait.
The 11 karanas
A karana is half a tithi — 6° of Moon-Sun elongation. Seven "movable" karanas (Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Garaja, Vanija, Vishti) rotate eight times each through the month, and four "fixed" ones (Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna) appear once each around Amavasya.
Vishti karana — universally called Bhadra — is the one to know. Tradition treats Bhadra as hostile to beginnings and to specific rituals: Raksha Bandhan must not be tied during Bhadra, and Holika Dahan waits for Bhadra to pass. This single rule moves the practical celebration time of major festivals every year, and explains why the "muhurat" on festival day is often a narrow evening window.
How much should daily life weigh them?
For routine days: lightly. Tithi, vara, nakshatra and the Rahu Kaal/choghadiya grids carry the practical weight. For weddings, threads ceremonies, griha pravesh and festival rituals: yoga and karana matter, and a purohit will check them. A clean rule of thumb — if the day shows Vyatipata/Vaidhriti yoga or Bhadra karana, schedule the important beginning in another window.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Bhadra in panchang?
Bhadra is the common name of Vishti karana — half-tithis scattered through the month considered obstructive for beginnings and for specific rituals like tying rakhi or lighting the Holika fire. Panchangs list Bhadra start and end times so rituals can be timed around it.
Is yoga in panchang related to yoga exercise?
No — same Sanskrit word ("union/combination"), different meaning. Panchang yoga is an astronomical quantity: the combined longitude of Sun and Moon divided into 27 named parts.
Which yogas are good for starting work?
Siddha ("accomplished"), Sadhya ("achievable"), Shubha, Amrita and Priti are the classics. Combined with a good choghadiya and a clear Rahu Kaal, they make a solid everyday muhurat.
