Gun Milan: The 36 Points Explained

Gun Milan ("matching of qualities"), also called Ashtakoota Milan, is the traditional first screen of marriage compatibility in Vedic astrology. It compares the two partners' MOON positions — rashi and nakshatra — across eight dimensions (kootas) whose weights sum to 36. It is deliberately simple: a structured way to compare temperaments before deeper chart analysis.

The eight kootas and their weights

Varna (1 point) — ego and spiritual hierarchy compatibility, from the rashi. Vashya (2) — mutual influence and attraction, from rashi groups (human, quadruped, water, wild, insect). Tara (3) — well-being, from counting between the two birth stars. Yoni (4) — instinctive and physical compatibility, from each nakshatra's animal symbol. Graha Maitri (5) — mental rapport, from the friendship of the two moon-sign lords. Gana (6) — temperament: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa nakshatra classes. Bhakoot (7) — the rashi-to-rashi axis, governing the household's emotional and material harmony. Nadi (8) — constitutional channel (Adi/Madhya/Antya); the heaviest single factor.

Reading the score

Under 18: traditionally not recommended without deeper analysis. 18–24: acceptable. 25–32: very good. 33–36: excellent (and rare). The score is a screen, not a verdict — two specific zeros matter more than the total: Nadi dosha (both partners the same Nadi, 0/8) and Bhakoot dosha (rashis in 2-12, 5-9 or 6-8 relation, 0/7). Tradition treats these seriously while also recognising cancellations (e.g., same rashi with different nakshatras can cancel Nadi dosha).

What gun milan does NOT cover

Mangal dosha (Mars affliction) is checked separately from the full charts. So are the strength of the seventh house, navamsa compatibility, dasha overlaps and longevity factors. A complete matching is gun milan PLUS these chart-level checks — which is why a 30/36 with severe Mangal dosha still sends families to an astrologer, and why our calculator labels itself the traditional summary rather than a final verdict.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many gun should match for marriage?

Convention says 18 of 36 is the minimum acceptable threshold, with 25+ considered strong. But composition matters: 20 points with clean Nadi and Bhakoot reads better than 26 with Nadi dosha.

Is gun milan enough to decide a marriage?

No — it is the first screen. Mangal dosha, navamsa, dasha and the seventh house are assessed from full birth charts. Treat gun milan as a structured starting point for a deeper conversation.

Can Nadi dosha be cancelled?

Classical texts list cancellations: same rashi but different nakshatras, same nakshatra but different padas, or strong mutual Graha Maitri. A practising astrologer should confirm any cancellation before relying on it.
